Welcome to the D3 pages, this web site is dedicated to the Sun Vitamin, it’s benefits, information, testing, foods and supplements.

Dosage: can vary from one person to another, depending on your current level (ng/ml), some take 1000 iu/day, some 5000 iu/day and others might take 15000 iu/day per day or even more. Vitamin d3 is highly tolerable and toxicity may occur at 40000 iu/day or more.

Levels: the test is known as “25 (OH) D” and the result is in ng/mL or nmol/L. remember that  1 ng/mL = 2.5 nmol/L.

0 < 15 ng/mL   -  severely deficient
15 – 30 ng/mL  -  deficient
30 – 40 ng/mL  -  below normal
40 – 60 ng/mL  -  normal
60 – 100 ng/mL – high normal
100 – 150 ng/mL – high
>150 ng/mL  -  possible toxicity

Usually, as a rule of  thumb, every 1000 iu/day you take, you will raise your 25(oh)D level by 10 ng/mL. To reach 50 ng/mL level (which is the minimal normal level) you need to supplement with 5000 iu/day. Please note that these are general rule, you might need less or more depending on your weight and size, make the blood test mentioned above and check with your doctor to achieve optimal levels.

You have three ways to get Vitamin D3; From sun light, food, or supplements. The sun is the best and our body natural way of producing D3. Amount made by the body depends on latitude (the closer to the equator the better), skin color (lighter skin makes more), weight (heavy people need more sun exposure), season (sun light not strong enough in winter to make any), time of the day (10 am -  2 p.m. is best time), also how much skin is exposed, each %5 of your body skin, manufactures 100-200 iu.

Food has a very little quantities of Vitamin D3, for example to get 2000 iu/day you need to drink 20 cups of milk a day, or eat 10 small (3 oz) cans of tuna.

Supplements is a great option for many people, quick and doesn’t cost alot. Comes in different sizes and formats; tablets, capsules, gelcaps, subligual spray, liquid, fish oil and other forms.

Cod Liver Oil is considered by some as the best source for vitamin d3, but it is really not true. Cod liver oil contains several toxins like mercury and others, and also has a big amount of Vitamin A. Unfortunately, Vitamin D3 & Vitamin A also have the same receptors in the body, so Vitamin A can decrease the absorption of D3. and Vitamin A is one of the easiest vitamins to get from food, that why there is no need to supplement it .
